Melatonin is a generalized hormone that is formed in the
brains's pineal gland. The body's own production of melatonin is
greatest at the age of 6, declines drastically at puberty, and
then diminishes with age.
The Secretion of Melatonin is regulated by daylight. When light
strikes the retina of the eye, nerve impulses are transmitted to
the pineal gland that, in turn, transforms this information into
a hormonal signal in the form of a nocturnal secretion of
Melatonin. The body's inner clock is thus regulated, and the REM
(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep that is so important to us all increases.
Melatonin is therefore used to treat a variety of disturbances
in circadian rhythm, such as jet lag.
Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant that, apart from all
its other properties, increases the uptake of other antioxidants.
Melatonin can activate the immune system's T-lymphocytes, can reduce inflammtions, increases blood platelet count and
diminishes the production of oestrogen that many tumours depend
on. Melatonin is also capable of enhacing the effect of
chemotherapy and reducing its deleterious side effects.
The size of the doze required varies greatly. Cancer patients will
often need 15-25 mg per day. The recommended dose for people
suffering from jet lag is 1 mg per time zone passed. It should
be administered one hour before midnight!
